The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.

Early Saturday Am Writethru: More great news, knock on wood, that the marketplace is rebounding – a bit. Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die secured $21.6M yesterday on its way to a $53M opening. Some even have it a tad higher at $54M at 3,885 theaters. While that’s what tracking saw three weeks ago, the sour market poured cold water on those prospects. Turns out, initial tracking was right. This is all according to early Am estimates.
Updated Screen Engine/PostTrak exits are 5 stars, 90% positive, and a great 84% definite recommend with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and an A- CinemaScore (the previous three movies all received As).
Bad Boys for Life drew 58% under 35, with 42% Black moviegoers, 30% Caucasian, 18% Hispanic and Latino and 10% Asian American/other. The fourthquel, also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, showed 50% under 35 with 44% Black, 26% Hispanic and Latino, 18% Caucasian and 12% Asian American/other buying tickets.

Over the last few weeks, box office pundits have debated whether Bad Boys: Ride or Die had the makings of a box office hit. The predictions have been all over the place, with some thinking it would open similarly to The Fall Guy and Furiosa with $30 million, while others thought it could hit $50 million (we predicted $40 million). According to Deadline’s early box office figures, the movie is opening above expectations with an estimated $52 million over the weekend. While that’s about $10 million shy of what Bad Boys For Life made, let’s not forget that the film opened before the pandemic, at a time when movie theatre attendance was a lot healthier than it is now. A $52 million start is a major success for Sony, with it arguably the first major money maker of the summer.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has broken records by debuting as the first overseas feature to top the Japanese box office in 2024, surpassing the opening of Mad Max: Fury Road from 2015. Despite mixed results elsewhere, the film had a standout launch in Japan, earning $2.05 million over its three-day opening weekend and attracting 199,163 admissions from May 31 to June 2. This performance exceeded Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Japanese debut figures, which earned $1.7 million (¥265m) from 175,579 admissions in its first weekend back in June 2015. As Dementus put it, hate is “one of the greatest forces of nature.” But he did miss just how closely hope can be tied to it – and George Miller has displayed this in a pretty incredible way, casting a bullied teen in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you remember, Quaden Bayles appeared in a heartbreaking viral video back in 2020, expressing how hurt and despondent he was over being teased for his dwarfism. But now you can see him as War Pup (master of the Bommy Knocker) in Furiosa, showing that hope should always win out over hate.
Alongside Quaden Bayles, George Miller also cast Sean Millis, a singer with Hunter’s Syndrome, in Furiosa. Millis, like far too many, was also bullied online for his looks, with rather disgusting comments hurled at him over his appearance. Fortunately, people like Miller continued to stand up for him, with even Furiosa...

Forty-five years after George Miller first brought audiences into the world of Mad Max, the latest installment, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has set a new milestone for the franchise. Despite its lukewarm box office performance, the film has achieved an impressive 90 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Box Office Performance Causes Concern The film’s financial performance has not been as stellar. Opening with $32 million domestically and $36.5 million overseas during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, it fell short of expectations and raised doubts about the future of another potential Mad Max project, The Wasteland. Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur faces a potential new challenge in his storied career. The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga debuted with a modest $32 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend and an additional $36.5 million overseas. This performance well below expectations casts doubt on Mad Max: The Wasteland, another installment Miller has been developing for years. Nico Lathouris and George Miller penned both The Wasteland and Furiosa during the making of the 2015 blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road. That film, recognized as an awards season juggernaut, snagged six Oscars...

Mad Max franchise mastermind George Miller recently brought us a new addition to the series with the release of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa (read our review Here) – and while that movie struggles to draw in viewers during its theatrical run, we have decided to take a look back at the first Mad Max sequel, the 1981 classic The Road Warrior (watch it Here). You can hear all about it in the embed above!
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he crafted with Terry Hayes and Brian Hannant, The Road Warrior – which is also known as Mad Max 2 outside of the United States – has the following synopsis: After avenging the death of his wife and young son at the hands of a vicious gang leader, Max drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Thanks to photorealistic tech advancements, George Miller evolved his approach to VFX on the “Mad Max” franchise in the nine years since “Fury Road.” Which is why he was much more comfortable using CG in post on “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” His thrilling stunt-driven chase sequences were shot in-camera with as many practical effects as possible, but CG enabled him to achieve greater dynamic energy while enhancing his stylized world-building.
Back from “Fury Road” was production VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson of Dneg, who was eager to play with a bigger digital toolbox. This not only encompassed more realistic fire, water, dust, and smoke but also allowed the VFX team to extend the Wasteland desert landscape and skies and embellish the newly created Gas Town and Bullet Town environments. Plus, they were able to replace or augment the iconic vehicles (especially the multitude of motorcycles) for the action set pieces.

Jude Law is ready to be challenged by screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes.
Law shared in an interview with Vanity Fair that he is set to work with “Challengers” scribe Kuritzkes on a Mike Nichols-inspired film.
“I’m developing a project with Justin Kuritzkes, who just wrote ‘Challengers,'” Law said. “The thing that bonded us was Mike Nichols. I said, ‘I think this is a Mike Nichols film.’ He was like, ‘Well, you would know.’ He felt the same when he went into ‘Challengers.'”
While Law kept the details of their upcoming project under wraps, he did reveal there would be a “sexual-social intercourse” element, much like in tense love triangle dramedy “Challengers” and late filmmaker Nichols’ famed works. Nichols directed Law in the 2004 romantic quadrangle drama “Closer.”

With the underwhelming box office of the latest film in the decade spanning Mad Max franchise, Furiosa, there may be no more of these wonderful, experimental, and auteur-driven action films made. That is a shame. But we can dream. As did this anonymous artist-designer who reimagined what the O.G. vehicle stunt spectacular auteur, Buster Keaton, might have made in the 1920s. Either way, it is pretty clear Silent-Era cinema masterpiece, The General, was a major influence on the Max Max franchise; particularly so as George Miller leaned more and more into vehicular...

Would-be summer blockbusters have had a bit of a hard time pulling in audiences lately. These movies not only failed to meet expectations but have also started to make cinema observers second guess what the audience and moviegoers crave. Movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa have had good buzz building before their premieres and both were generally well received by the critics and people who saw it. However, neither made much in the way of money, and even a seemingly sure thing like Garfield didn’t fare much better.
The real test comes with the summer release titles like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2 or Despicable Me 4. All of them are movie sequels with pre-established fan bases and past successes. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is also somewhat of a litmus test. The franchise has been a big money-maker, and it may give an insight into whether...

It might take some “Bad Boys” to save this summer’s bad box office start.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has made $5.875 million in Thursday previews at the box office so far.
Sony and Columbia’s fourth “Bad Boys” movie, and the follow-up to 2020’s surprise hit “Bad Boys for Life,” is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million this weekend. However, Sony has a smaller estimate at $30 million. The more conservative projection could be overly cautious due to the growing number of summer films, such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “If” and “The Fall Guy,” that have failed to connect with theatergoers.
With the summer box office far behind previous years’ grosses, theater owners are hoping for some relief sooner rather than later — and hopefully “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is their answer. It also marks Smith’s first major film since...

Buckle up because the Summer movie season kicks into high gear with a brand-new installment of a big loud action franchise. This one goes back 29 years, so it’s a few decades behind the recent Furiosa which is the latest entry of a series that’s now 45 years old. Oddly this weekend’s big release marks only four years since the previous, the shortest turn-around time of the four. Yes, this makes for a quartet centered around a buddy-cop duo that’s well into middle age but still embraces a youthful moniker in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.

With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

When Adam Wingard said he would not return for the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, fans of Legendary‘s latest clash of the titans fell into despair. Wingard brought something special to Godzilla and Kong’s latest city-destroying brawl, and we hoped he’d remain a part of the franchise. Thankfully, Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, is stepping up to the plate.
The follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: New Empire should continue the story from Wingard’s latest blockbuster, focusing on Kong and Godzilla’s tag team antics alongside several Titans waiting in the wings. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham will pen the script.
While Sputore is in, Wingard is moving on to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.

It’s a sad day for moviegoers living in Texas and Minnesota as Alamo Drafthouse closes its doors in six locations after the franchise filed for bankruptcy. The closures include five locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a Minnesota theater in Woodbury. The closures are already in effect, with termination of employment contracts to follow immediately. A message to employees is circulating online mentioning the company losing $1 million in 2023. The reality is that Alamo Drafthouse has been fighting an uphill battle since the pandemic. People go to the theater less than they used to, not even for quality cinema experiences like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

There is a new Hunger Games movie in the works, and this time it will be a prequel about Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 tribute and champion played by Woody Harrelson in the original cycle of films in the 2010s. The news came simultaneously Thursday with the announcement of the book upon which the film will be based: Suzanne Collins’ forthcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
According to the press release, the new Young Adult novel and film will follow the events of the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell, when Haymitch became an unwilling tribute as a teenager. Presumably the experiences he endured both in the arena and the Capitol will turn him into the bitter middle-aged drunkard who Katniss Everdeen meets and redeems over the course of the original The Hunger Games story, which is set 24 years after the events of Sunrise on the Reaping.

Six Alamo Drafthouse franchised locations are closing abruptly after their owner filed for bankruptcy.
The venues include five Texas locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as a Minnesota venue in Woodbury. The theaters are operated by Two is One, One is None, LLC, which is filing for Chapter 7. The closure is effective immediately and staff has been informed that their employment has been terminated. In a message from the franchisee to employees that was circulating on social media, the owners said they lost “over $1 million” in 2023. The Texas theaters are located in Richardson, Las Colinas, Lake Highlands, Dallas, and Denton.
The closures come as the summer box office is suffering a steep decline, with major films such as “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” failing to connect with audiences. Hollywood has also struggled to release as many films theatrically, after enduring production shutdowns during Covid and the 2023 actors and writers strikes.

After several weeks of disappointing openings, Hollywood has its fingers crossed that the old-school star power of Will Smith returning to the Bad Boys franchise will give moviegoers a push to return to theaters. Indeed, the well-reviewed four-fuel has the benefit of opening hot on the heels of the franchise’s biggest entry to date, Bad Boys For Life, which made over $200 million domestically. It opened to a gargantuan $62 million, and while Bad Boys: Ride or Die seems unlikely to make that much money, it should still do decently.
I’m predicting an opening in the $40 million range, which would be an ok number for a franchise that, previously, was curiously light at the box office. Let’s remember that the first movie only actually made $65 million domestically, while the huge-budget sequel, Bad Boys 2, was considered something of a flop in 2003 when it made “only” $138 million, despite opening at...

Heading into Memorial Day weekend, it was already anticipated that the box office would witness its lowest totals since the turn of the century. The final numbers turned out to be even lower than expected. The No. 1 film for this weekend, “Furiosa,” made just $32 million over the four-day period, making it the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day release since 1995, when Casper opened to $22 million (before adjusting for inflation). This drop underscores a significant downturn in theatrical earnings. Box office analysis company Nash Information Systems had projected a $160 million 4-day total prior to the weekend, which...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Jacob Scipio, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Nuñez, Eric Dane, and Ioan Gruffud
Director: Adil and Bilall
Bad Boys: Ride or Die Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
What’s Good: Lawrence is back better than ever, and he basically steals the show for everyone else, and it is quite nice seeing him in the spotlight once more.
What’s Bad: Plotwise, the movie makes no sense, and it feels quite confusing at times.
Loo Break: As usual, the second act stretches more than it should, so you could go to the loo right there.
Watch or Not?: If you are in for a fun action movie, then this is a must, thanks to its impressive action and good humor.
Language: English (with subtitles).

After the worst May the box office has seen in 26 years, theaters are hoping that Sony/Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” can restart Hollywood’s momentum in June with a solid opening weekend. But not everyone is optimistic that will be the case.
Produced on a reported $100 million budget, “Bad Boys 4” is relatively less expensive than many of its peers in the summer action film space. That makes the current projections of a $45-50 million opening weekend — which was below the $62 million three-day opening of “Bad Boys For Life” on MLK weekend in 2020 — a decent start that could allow Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s latest wild ride to turn a profit if it continues to play among male moviegoers over the age of 35.
But “Bad Boys 4” is heading into theaters with as little momentum as any summer title, especially an R-rated one, has had in recent memory.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is No. 1 once again, nearly two months before its theatrical release, while Netflix’s “Bridgerton” stands strong at No. 2 for the third week in a row. Emotions run high as Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” rises to No. 3 just ahead of its June 14 release.

Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.
Everyone knew that 2024 would not be a great year. It was never going to equal the $9.1 billion of 2023, but $8.5 billion was the hope and $8 billion was the consensus.

With legacy sequels being all the rage in Hollywood, it’s within reason to imagine that perhaps a world exists where George Miller asks Mel Gibson to return for a new ‘Mad Max’ film in the future. If “Ghostbusters” can do it, so can ‘Mad Max.’ Well, there’s one problem, though–George Miller hasn’t thought about what an elderly Max would be like.

Within minutes of the actors strike ending on Nov. 9, Ryan Reynolds was making plans to get back to London and the set of Deadpool & Wolverine, one of the many movies shut down in mid-July when the walkout commenced. He and director Shawn Levy were determined to make their July 26 release date, which they were able to accomplish. For other tentpoles, it was too late, and they would ultimately decamp to 2025.
One studio head says the impact of the writers’ walkout, which lasted five months until a settlement was reached on Sept. 27, also played a major role. “Think of it like this — if the actors’ strike shut down the oil refinery, then the writers’ strike shut down the oil fields.”
Toward the end of the SAG-AFTRA talks, studio chiefs were accused of being disingenuous when saying their 2024 release calendars were in danger every day the four-month strike dragged. Now the...

One of 2023’s blockbusters lands on the streamer, with Oscar in hand and more thrills than most Hollywood summer offerings
At a divisive time of much uncertainty and strife, a constant has emerged from the ocean to serve as a great uniter: Godzilla. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, from Warner’s MonsterVerse franchise, is the rare fifth movie to approach a series high; just ask its studio stablemate Furiosa, an acclaimed fifth installment that’s become one of many entertaining 2024 movies to struggle at the box office, how difficult that is. On either side of the Godzilla x Kong triumph sit several more wins for the big G, courtesy of Godzilla Minus One, the most recent entry from the Japanese company Toho. That movie did great business at the box office last December, won an Oscar for visual effects in March, and currently sits atop the Netflix charts in its long-awaited streaming debut,...
