These include five south Indian films -- Ponmagal Vandhal (Tamil), Penguin (Tamil and Telugu), French Biriyani (Kannada), Law (Kannada) and Sufiyum Sujathayum (Malayalam). With theatres shut due to the lockdown necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic and uncertainty over when they will reopen, many producers are considering going the Ott route to cut their losses. But, how much money can a film make as a direct Ott release? Baahubali producer Shobu Yarlagadda reckons that a small budget film will be able to recover its cost of production or at least a good fraction of it with a direct Ott release. After the tremendous superhit success of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali: The Conclusion took the nation by storm, surpassing all records with its overwhelming box office collection of more than 1500 crores. We have an intriguing post from Prabhat Choudhary of Spice, a premier PR agency which handled both Baahubali 1 and 2 where reveals his thoughts on the magnum opus called Baahubali and why it struck a chord with all the segments of such a diverse nation.
Having met the country’s biggest director SS Rajamouli and producer Shobu Yarlagadda, Choudhary realized that the distant dream that he thought was Baahubali, was turning into a reality he never thought was possible. The idea was to deliver the best they could in each of their field of expertise.
With Baahubali, the basic crux of how to sell the film was to make it pan-India, rather than a film that caters to only the South.
