A+E Networks operates 10 linear networks, the company made sure to note Wednesday during its virtual upfront, but execs said the company’s reach goes beyond the diminishing horizons of pay-tv.
President and Chairman Paul Buccieri also highlighted the company’s 50 Fast channels and teased some of the 2,000-plus hours of original programming planned for 2024 during the pitch to ad buyers. Serving as a conduit to talent is another priority for A+E, he added. “Through strategic investments and partnerships with studios and talent management, we’ve been able to build capabilities and collaborate with some of the most sought-after storytellers in their fields. Our strategic interests now represent nearly 3,000 artists.”

Mike Miller, international vice president of the entertainment trade union IATSE and director of the union’s Motion Picture and Television department, is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy. He admits that it’s unusual for him to speak to the Hollywood trade press — about anything. But Miller is happy to step out of his comfort zone to talk about IATSE’s role in the Roybal School of Film and Television Production, which launched in August with 150 students a secondary school campus in downtown Los Angeles

It’s just after 9 a.m. and class is fully in session at Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet, a specialty academy near Downtown Los Angeles. Cell phones are out of sight, pens are scribbling away and projectors are humming.
But instead of reflecting lessons on geography, grammar or science, in one classroom, the first page of a Harry Potter script is on screen. In another, close to two dozen students are hard at work on their “superhero backstories,” an assignment that requires they present original designs for a superhero’s costume both on the job and off, taking into account character, time period, story and concept.
Maybe out of respect, or because they’re so engrossed with the task, only a few students peek over their shoulder at the slight commotion caused by a tour of Hollywood power players-turned-Roybal insiders who’ve...

A+E Networks has taken a minority stake in management and production firm Range Media Partners. No financial details are being disclosed but the stake is believed to be in the high teens percent and the deal in the $50 million ballpark, with Range’s valuation at around $300 million. That is a hefty valuation, especially for a company that is just a year and a half old. It is close to what one of Hollywood biggest, most established management-production companies, 3 Arts, sold for in 2018 after 27 years in the business.

Peter Olsen, president of ad sales, sees a blended future for the ad-supported TV business, but one in which Nielsen will continue to play a central role.
“Nielsen is still going to be the backbone of everything, as imperfect as it may be,” the exec predicted in an interview with Deadline ahead of the company’s virtual upfront today. “Newer players pushing into the industry all add a certain value. What we’re learning is that there’s value beyond the Grp or the impression. That’s what these new tools can kind of bring to the fore.”
The media business has been in a state of upheaval over Nielsen since it emerged last year that the company undercounted linear and streaming viewership. While there has been friction for decades between networks and the third-party firm, the epic pivot to streaming has set off a noisy scramble as tens of...

A+E Networks has long been in the business of selling advertising time for its linear cable networks. But as it moves into a new era of haggling over audiences who watch TV in decidedly non-traditional fashion, it has started to push advertisers to find new ways to spend their money.
“As our industry continues to evolve, we remain focused on premium, popular and relevant stories and storytellers and are expanding the ways our viewers can find our content,’ says Paul Buccieri,” president and chairman of A+E Networks Group, in a prepared statement, adding: “In an ever-changing landscape, we are providing our advertisers more — more programming featuring the world’s most beloved talent, more best-in-class opportunities to reach their targets, and more custom solutions to exceed their goals and deeply engage their audiences.” A+E Networks is holding a virtual upfront presentation Wednesday for advertisers.
